Book review of The Goblins Are Revolting: An Isekai Adventure

by D. D. Webb (Author)

In "The Goblins Are Revolting: An Isekai Adventure," the third installment of D.D. Webb's hilarious fantasy series, misanthropic dark lord Seiji faces a new challenge: a goblin rebellion. Transported to another world, Seiji, despite his immense power, prefers solitude. However, his attempts at benevolent (yet still villainous) rule are disrupted by a self-proclaimed goblin king, sparking a full-scale war. This conflict offers Seiji a chance to create a devastating weapon against his nemesis, the annoyingly virtuous hero Yoshi. Expect brutal humor, political intrigue, and plenty of goblin mayhem in this wildly popular portal fantasy, previously a hit on Royal Road, now available in paperback, ebook, and audiobook.

Review The Goblins Are Revolting

Oh my gosh, I just finished "The Goblins Are Revolting," and I'm buzzing! This third installment in the "Only Villains Do That" series absolutely lived up to the hype, and honestly, surpassed my expectations in some ways. D.D. Webb has a knack for writing characters you both love to hate and hate to love, and Seiji is the perfect example. His misanthropy is hilarious, his schemes are brilliant, and his begrudging attempts at "goodness" are endlessly entertaining. Seeing him navigate this goblin-fueled conflict was pure comedic gold – the sheer audacity of his plans, the way he constantly underestimates (and then overcompensates for) his own power, it's all just wonderfully absurd.

I particularly appreciated the increased interaction between Seiji and Yoshi, the "hero." Their dynamic is such a perfect clash of personalities, and it’s refreshing to see a villain/hero relationship that's actually funny and engaging rather than just the typical antagonistic trope. The tension between them is palpable, and I'm eagerly anticipating even more of their witty sparring in future books.

Now, the one tiny thing I noticed—and it's a minor quibble at best—was the reduced presence of some of Seiji's female companions. I understand that introducing a whole new cast of goblin characters required some juggling, and it didn't detract hugely from the overall story, but I did miss Astrid and their dynamic a little. I totally get why their relationship is complicated—Seiji's trauma and the unique circumstances of his situation make a conventional romance unlikely. Even the hinted-at physical limitations add an intriguing layer. The chemistry between them is undeniably there, simmering beneath the surface of their interactions, and the thought of any potential development is tantalizing. However, I’m perfectly content with the way things are, understanding that their relationship might be uniquely defined and complex in ways typical romances are not.

But let's be honest, the core of the book is the clever plot and Seiji's consistently hilarious internal monologue. The way he approaches problems—with a mix of brutal pragmatism, cunning strategy, and a healthy dose of "screw it, let's do it anyway"—is endlessly entertaining. He’s resourceful, adapting his plans flawlessly to unexpected events. And the sheer scale of his schemes – involving goblins, armies, and possibly even genocide! – is just wonderfully over-the-top.

Overall, "The Goblins Are Revolting" is a fantastic addition to the series. It’s funny, witty, cleverly plotted, and leaves you wanting more. The pacing is excellent, the characters are well-developed (even the goblins!), and the overall narrative keeps you engaged from beginning to end. I'm already counting down the days until book four! Seriously, if you enjoyed the previous books, you absolutely need to read this one. And if you haven't started the series yet…well, what are you waiting for?
